The contract calls for AEI to transport raw materials from the U.S. to American Home Products' facilities in San Juan, and to carry finished goods from San Juan back to the United States. Headquartered in New Jersey, American Home Products is one of the world's largest research-based pharmaceutical and health care products companies and is a leading developer, manufacturer and marketer of prescription and over-the-counter medications. It is also a leader in vaccines, biotechnology, agricultural products, animal health care and medical devices. "The shipping of pharmaceuticals requires a great deal of precision," said Kenneth A. Nieze, vice president, sales, North America. "American Home Products' shipments are high-value, perishable commodities, and as a preferred carrier, AEI is more than capable of meeting their standard for service." "AEI is a seasoned player in the airfreight industry and has extensive experience working with the pharmaceutical industry," said Timothy P. Murphy, Manager Operations Analysis for American Home Products. "AEI offered us an attractive mix of price and service, and we know that they deliver excellent value for our investment." U.S. pharmaceutical companies have long been attracted to Puerto Rico as a result of a federal law known as Section 936, which offers tax advantages to companies establishing production facilities in the commonwealth. The Section 936 law has since been repealed and the tax benefits are being phased out over time. Still, many airfreight companies continue to report robust traffic activity to and from Puerto Rico. Based in Darien, Connecticut, AEI is an integrated logistics company offering international air and ocean forwarding, customs brokerage, consulting, warehousing and distribution and information services through its worldwide network of 876 locations in 135 countries. AEI reported gross revenues of $1.3 billion and net income of $38.5 million in 1996. END
