AVALONBAY COMMUNITIES ANNOUNCES DATE FOR ITS THIRD
QUARTER EARNINGS RELEASE AND CONFERENCE CALL

Alexandria, VA (September 28, 2000) - AVALONBAY COMMUNITIES, INC. (NYSE/PCX:AVB) announced today that it will release third quarter earnings on October 18, 2000 after the market closes, and hold its third quarter conference call on October 19, 2000 at 4:00 PM Eastern Time.
