Competitive Tech: Sun-less Tanning Venture
For Immediate Release:
Competitive Technologies, Inc. Announces Sun-less Tanning Venture
--CTT Licensee Will Finance and Develop Compounds for Sun-less Tanning
--CTT Assumes Equity Position in its Exclusive Licensee
Fairfield, CT (March 27, 2000) - Competitive Technologies, Inc.
(AMEX:CTT) today announced that it completed an exclusive license for its
"Sun-less Tanning" technology, invented at the University of Arizona,
while assuming an equity position aggregating approximately 22% in its
exclusive licensee Melanotan Corporation (Melanotan). Melanotan
subsequently sub-licensed the technology to an Australian Company, Epitan
Limited (Epitan), which has raised funds to finance and develop sun-less
tanning compounds, as well as a method of delivery for those compounds,
for commercial sale. Melanotan owns a 25% equity interest in Epitan.
This patented technology, which stimulates certain skin cells that
produce a dark pigment causing general darkening of the skin, will offer
an Alternative to sunscreens, the U.S. market for which is approximately
$400 million annually. The product will require approval by appropriate
regulatory agencies.
Following administration of the compound, an individual would turn an
even, natural, bronze tan which could be darkened further by exposure to
sunlight. Early tests conducted by dermatologists, with over 75 patients
using the CTT licensed technology, showed the resultant tan to be even
and equivalent to a "natural tan." Other sunless tanning products, like
creams and lotions, usually result in a tan characterized by streaks,
blotches, or bare spots as well as an unnatural skin coloration.
This technology will allow its users to maintain a natural looking tan
while avoiding exposure to cancer- causing ultraviolet rays. More than
800,000 new cases of skin cancer are diagnosed every year, making it the
most common form of cancer in the United States. Melanoma, a specific
skin cancer, is one of the most aggressive metastatic cancers known and
its incidence (32,000 diagnoses and 7,000 deaths per year) has increased
4% per year since 1973.
CTT President, Frank McPike commented, "We are excited about the
prospects of this 'acorn' investment and look forward to Epitan's success
moving the sun-less tanning technology through the Australian regulatory
process and into the commercial marketplace." Mr. McPike will serve on
the Board of Directors of Melanotan.
CTT and its client, the University of Arizona, will receive royalties
through Melanotan on the sale of the developed sun-less tanning products
by Epitan. In addition, CTT expects to benefit from its equity ownership
in Melanotan.
