Competitive Tech: Announces Testing Progress
For Immediate Release:
CTT Announces Testing Progress for
Erectile Dysfunction and Hepatitis C Product Therapeutics
Fairfield, CT (May 11, 2000) Competitive Technologies, Inc. (AMEX:CTT)
reported today on recent announcements made by Palatin Technologies Inc.
(AMEX:PTN) and Ribozyme Pharmaceuticals, Inc.(Nasdaq:RZYM) with respect to
pharmaceutical testing progress each has achieved utilizing technologies
they respectively licensed from CTT. Revenues generated from any FDA
approved products will produce royalties for CTT and its clients.
"It is extremely gratifying to see the progress made by each of these
companies in their goals to improve the quality of life, as well as produce
valid and profitable products," said Frank R. McPike, Jr., President,
Competitive Technologies. "We expect that both our clients who were the
source of these technologies and our shareholders will benefit should these
products receive regulatory approval and become commercially successful
products."
Palatin indicated that PT-14, the company's therapeutic for treating
erectile dysfunction, continues to move along in its development process.
Palatin said that they have scheduled a pre-IND (Investigational New Drug)
meeting with the FDA and anticipate filing an IND application and beginning
clinical trials later this year. Palatin is a CTT exclusive licensee for
the underlying technology, developed at the University of Arizona, used in
developing PT-14. The National Institute of Health estimates that 30
million men suffer from erectile dysfunction.
Ribozyme Pharmaceuticals, Inc. reported today the completion of single dose
safety trials of the anti-Hepatitis C ribozyme, LY-466700. The study was
conducted by its development partner, Eli Lilly and Company, and found that
the drug appeared to be well tolerated in the first cohort of normal
volunteers.
RZYM indicated that administration of LY-466700 to chronic Hepatitis C
patients has now been initiated in a clinical trial designed to study
safety and to assess the effect of the compound on HCV viral RNA levels
following a 28 day dose-response regimen. RYZM expects that the drug will
be administered by a daily subcutaneous injection to approximately 20
patients.
Hepatitis C is a blood-borne infection that was not routinely screened from
the blood supply prior to 1992. As a result of this and other methods of
transmission, millions of Americans are infected and may not know it.
Screening is recommended, as the infection, if untreated, may cause liver
damage, cirrhoses, cancer and death. Infection rates are high worldwide,
with over 125 million individuals carrying Hepatitis C, according to the
World Health Organization.
Ribozymes, the product of Dr. Thomas Cech's Nobel Prize winning science,
are synthetically engineered to act as molecular scissors to cleave target
RNA in a highly specific manner.
