E-Z-EM, Inc.: News Release ANGIODYNAMICS, INCORPORATED October 9, 1997 PRESS RELEASE Contact: Michael P. Cody FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Director, Corporate Communications (518) 798-1215, Ext. 140 PULSE*SPRAY INJECTOR IS PURCHASED BY COLUMBlA/HCA HEALTHCARE CORPORATION Queensbury, NY, October 9, 1997. AngioDynamics, a wholly owned subsidiary of E-Z-EM, Inc. (Amex: EZM.A and EZM.B) announced today its first United States sale and installation of its recently FDA cleared Pulse*Spray Injector to Columbia/HCA's Tulsa Regional Medical Center of Tulsa, Oklahoma. The Pulse*Spray Injector is an automated method of delivering blood clot dissolving drugs through the AngioDynamics PRO catheters. The system automatically and consistently delivers precise amounts of the drug into the clot with a physician-specific drug delivery protocol. The injector is small and may be easily transported for drug delivery in the patient's room, thus freeing expensive room time in radiology. George Erbacher, D.O., chief of Interventional Radiology at the Columbia Tulsa Regional Medical Center said: "Dissolving the clot will be faster and more accurate. In addition to the speed of the procedure and short hospital stays, the use of the Pulse*Spray Injector will result in decreased or no time in the lCU, which should result in tremendous savings for our patients." Dr. Erbacher added: "Studies show that treatment of acute arterial clots with urokinase result in a 40 percent less mortality rate than treating with surgery alone. We strive to use urokinase first to uncover the underlying cause of clotted vessels then use the surgery or other catheter techniques to save legs. I think the Pulse*Spray Injector will give us an even better chance of avoiding unnecessary surgery, especially amputations." According to Columbia sources Dr. Erbacher plans to begin a study on the injector's effectiveness in treating illiofemoral Deep Vein Thrombus (clots located in the deep veins located above and behind the knee), an area which has become his specialty. In the study, Erbacher plans to compare the effectiveness of the procedure with traditional methods. It will be the first study of its kind in the country. Eamonn P. Hobbs, president and chief executive officer of AngioDynamics said: "We are delighted that Columbia/HCA is our first United States customer. Dr. Erbacher has been keenly interested in our injector for over three years. It is gratifying that once we received FDA clearance, Columbia/HCA acted instantly to purchase our product." Mr. Hobbs added: "We in the United States are fortunate that our health care system pays for aggressive drug therapy of clotted arteries and veins-although at a high cost. We are convinced that our Pulse*Spray Injector is going to help lower these costs. This is an example of a good product that should result in better medicine, satisfied patients and lower costs."
