(AMEX: EZM) today announced that it is jointly demonstrating a prototype computer-aided detection (CAD) solution for CT colonography, also known as virtual colonoscopy, with Vital Images, Inc. (Nasdaq Smallcap: VTAL) and R2 Technology, Inc. The CAD solution, demonstrated by E-Z-EM on the Company’s innerviewGITM system, allows a radiologist to automatically segment and define regions of interest that may represent colon polyps in multislice CT (MSCT) exams. Although no formal agreement yet exists between E-Z-EM and R2 Technology for the development of a Colon CAD solution, the application was jointly demonstrated as a work-in-progress by the three companies at the 88th Annual Scientific Assembly of the Radiological Society of North America, held in Chicago, IL from December 1-6, 2002. Computer-aided detection is a software technology that is designed to identify suspicious areas during CT screening exams. The technology uses sophisticated computer algorithms to screen the thousands of images generated by the latest high-speed CT scanners for potential lesions, automatically marking suspect features for further evaluation by the radiologists. The technology addresses a growing need among radiologists whose ability to read and confidently assess CT imaging studies, such as virtual colonoscopy, is challenged by the volume of images to evaluate. It can take an experienced radiologist approximately 15 minutes to read a typical virtual colonoscopy study. Commenting on the announcement, Anthony A. Lombardo, President and CEO of E-Z-EM, said "Though a CAD solution for virtual colonoscopy is in the earliest stages of development, we are delighted to be working with Vital Images and R2 Technology to demonstrate its potential through the prototype presented here at the RSNA. We believe that CAD capability will be an important component in virtual colonoscopy in the future, and though no formal agreement to do so currently exists, we plan to explore options for integrating the technology into innerviewGI." Colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States. The American Cancer Society (ACS) estimates that about 150,000 new cases of colon cancer will be diagnosed in 2002. Colon cancer is expected to cause about 48,100 deaths and an estimated 8,500 men and women will die from rectal cancer during 2002. About E-Z-EM E-Z-EM, Inc.
