               HANNAFORD INCREASES QUARTERLY DIVIDEND

SCARBOROUGH, MAINE, February 13, 1998 -- Hannaford Bros. Co. (NYSE-HRD), a
multi-regional food retailer, has declared an increased quarterly dividend on
the Common Stock of $.15 per share, payable on March 26, 1998, to shareholders
of record at the close of business on March 13, 1998.

The new quarterly dividend rate represents an increase of 11.1% over the $.135
per share paid in each quarter of 1997.  Hannaford has paid dividends on its
Common Stock for fifty consecutive years and has increased the aggregate
dividend paid per share (after adjusting for stock splits and stock dividends)
for thirty-six consecutive years.
