          HANNAFORD DECLARES REGULAR QUARTERLY DIVIDEND

Scarborough, Maine,  July 20, 1998:  Hannaford Bros. Co. (NYSE-HRD), a
multi-regional food retailer, today declared a regular quarterly dividend on
its Common Stock.  The quarterly dividend of $.15 per share will be paid on
September 24, 1998, to shareholders of record at the close of business  on
September 11, 1998
