                  HANNAFORD DECLARES QUARTERLY DIVIDEND

SCARBOROUGH, MAINE, October 8, 1997 -- Hannaford Bros. Co. (NYSE-HRD), a
multi-regional food retailer, has declared a regular quarterly dividend on the
Common Stock of $.135 per share, payable on December 18, 1997 to shareholders
of record at the close of business on December 5, 1997.
