                   HANNAFORD REPORTS SALES FOR NOVEMBER

Scarborough, Maine: Hannaford Bros. Co. (NYSE-HRD), a multi-regional food
retailer, reported today that its sales and other revenues for the four weeks
ended November 22, 1997, were $244,932,000, an increase of 4.9% over the
$233,510,000 reported for the same period last year.

Sales and other revenues for the forty-seven weeks ended November 22, 1997,
were $2,842,780,000, up 7.0% over the $2,620,715,000 achieved during the first
forty-seven weeks of 1996.
