                 HANNAFORD REPORTS SALES FOR OCTOBER

Scarborough, Maine:  Hannaford Bros. Co. (NYSE-HRD), multi-regional food
retailer, reported today that its sales and other revenues for the four weeks
ended October 31, 1998, were $249,278,000, an increase of 3.0% over the
$242,122,000 reported for the same period last year.  

Sales and other revenues for the forty-three weeks ended October 31, 1998,
were $2,722,620,000, up 4.8% over the $2,597,848,000 achieved during the first
forty-three weeks of 1997.
